HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101 - Fixing Instant Ink enrollment error codes (HP Smart app)

During Instant Ink enrollment, an error code displays on the setup screen. Fix the issue to complete the Instant Ink enrollment for your printer.

Prepare to enroll in HP Instant Ink

To help avoid enrollment errors and issues, finish the printer setup process in the HP Smart app.

  1. Open the HP Smart app.

  2. Create or sign in to an account.

  3. Add your printer to the app, making sure to connect it to the internet during setup.

  4. Finish the printer setup.

Code 201: Add a printer to learn more about Instant Ink

When the setup screen displays error Code 201, add your printer to your HP Smart account to complete the Instant Ink enrollment.

  1. From the setup error screen, click Continue to add your printer to the HP Smart app.

    If you closed the screen, open the HP Smart app, make sure you are signed in to your account, and then click Set up or add printer or Add Printer on the home screen.

  2. For Android, iOS devices, select the type of printer you want to set up when prompted.

    • For printers not set up or connected to the internet, tap Get Started.

    • For printers already set up and connected to the internet, tap Complete Now (iOS) or Add printer (Android).

  3. Wait for the HP Smart app to find your printer, and then select it from the list of available devices.

    If the printer is not found, go to HP printer not found by the software or device during setup to troubleshoot the issue.

  4. Follow the instructions to complete the printer setup and Instant Ink enrollment.

Code 406: Unfortunately, this printer isn’t eligible for Instant Ink

When the setup screen displays Code 406, the printer is not eligible for Instant Ink. To complete enrollment, add an Instant Ink eligible printer to your HP Smart account.

  1. From the setup error screen, click Add New Printer to add your printer to the HP Smart app.

    If you closed the screen, open the HP Smart app, make sure you are signed in to your account, and then click Set up or add printer or Add Printer on the home screen.

  2. For Android, iOS devices, select the type of printer you want to set up when prompted.

    • For printers not set up or connected to the internet, tap Get Started.

    • For printers already set up and connected to the internet, tap Complete Now (iOS) or Add printer (Android).

  3. Wait for the HP Smart app to find your printer, and then select it from the list of available devices.

    If the printer is not found, go to HP printer not found by the software or device during setup to troubleshoot the issue.

  4. Follow the instructions to complete the printer setup and Instant Ink enrollment.

Code 409: We can’t find your printer over Wi-Fi or Ethernet

When the setup screen displays error Code 409, connect your printer to same local network as the device with the HP Smart app, and then complete the Instant Ink enrollment.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the same network as the device with the HP Smart app.

  2. Turn the printer off then back on to clear any potential connection issues.

  3. From the setup error screen, click Return to Home to open the HP Smart app.

    If you closed the screen, open the HP Smart app, and then make sure you are signed in to your account.

  4. Wait for the printer to connect to the HP Smart app, and then check the connection status next to the printer icon.

    • If Ready displays with a green check mark icon , click the Instant Ink tile on the home screen, and then follow the instructions to complete Instant Ink enrollment.

    • If Printer offline displays with a black icon , go to HP printer is offline or not responding to troubleshoot the issue.

Code 412: Finish printer setup to connect your printer to HP Instant Ink

When the setup screen displays error Code 412, finish setting up the printer in the HP Smart app to complete the Instant Ink enrollment.

  1. From the setup error screen, click Return to Home to open the HP Smart app.

    If you closed the screen, open the HP Smart app, and then make sure you are signed in to your account.

  2. On the home screen, click Finish Setup next to the printer icon when it displays.

  3. Follow the instructions to complete the printer setup and Instant Ink enrollment.

Code 417: This printer is already enrolled in HP Instant Ink

When the setup screen displays error Code 417, the printer is already enrolled in Instant Ink. To complete enrollment, add a new printer or select a different printer from your HP Smart account.

Add a new printer for Instant Ink enrollment

Add a new printer to your HP Smart account to complete the Instant Ink enrollment.

  1. From the setup error screen, click Add New Printer to add your printer to the HP Smart app.

    If you closed the screen, open the HP Smart app, make sure you are signed in to your account, and then click Set up or add printer or Add Printer on the home screen.

  2. For Android, iOS devices, select the type of printer you want to set up when prompted.

    • For printers not set up or connected to the internet, tap Get Started.

    • For printers already set up and connected to the internet, tap Complete Now (iOS) or Add printer (Android).

  3. Wait for the HP Smart app to find your printer, and then select it from the list of available devices.

    If the printer is not found, go to HP printer not found by the software or device during setup to troubleshoot the issue.

  4. Follow the instructions to complete the printer setup and Instant Ink enrollment.

Select a different printer for Instant Ink enrollment

Select a different printer from your HP Smart account to complete the Instant Ink enrollment.

  • If the setup error screen is still open, click Back, select the printer you want to enroll from the list, and then follow the instructions to finish the Instant Ink enrollment.

  • If you closed the setup error screen, use the HP Smart app to select a different printer from your account to enroll.

    1. Open the HP Smart app, and then make sure you are signed in to your account.

    2. From the home screen, navigate to the printer you want to enroll.

    3. Click the Instant Ink tile, and then follow the instructions to complete the Instant Ink enrollment.
