HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101, HP LaserJet, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise, HP Managed - Unable to find network printer in Windows after changing the network from private to public

After changing the network connection on a laptop or tablet (running Windows 8 or later versions) from Private to Public, and then back to a Private network, one or more of the following issues arise:

  • Unable to print.

  • The printer is offline.

  • Printer icon status shows "Offline".

  • File and printer sharing is disabled.

  • Unable to find printers or other devices on the network.

Cause

When changing the network connection on a laptop or tablet to a Public network, the Network discovery and File and printer sharing settings are automatically turned OFF, and auto-discovery of printers (and other devices) on the network fails.

When the laptop or tablet is reconnected to a Private network, these settings do not automatically revert and must be manually restored.

Solution

Follow these steps to reset the Private network settings and restore auto-discovery of printers and other devices on the network.

NOTE:

The print setting options will vary depending on the Windows version and Office applications or app.

  1. On the laptop or tablet, open the Control Panel, click Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center.

  2. In the Network and Sharing Center window, click Manage advanced sharing settings or Change advanced sharing settings.

3. Under Change sharing options for different network profiles, click the arrow next to Private to expand the private network profile section (if it is not already expanded).

ADVANCED SHARING SETTINGS WINDOW > PRIVATE NETWORK PROFILE SECTION EXPANDED

  4. Under Network discovery, select Turn on network discovery, and then click the check box next to Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices.

    NOTE:

Administrator permission might be required to turn on network discovery. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  5. Under File and printer sharing, select Turn on file and printer sharing.

  6. Click Save Changes or Save changes at the bottom of the window to save the changes.

After updating these settings, reconnect to the Private network and locate the network printer to resume printing.
