About connection types

Learn about the different connection types.

  • Automatic: Allows any mobile device to connect to the printer

  • Manual: Requires mobile devices to be confirmed at the printer control panel before they can connect to the printer

    NOTE:

The Manual option is more secure because before a connection can be established, the printer will prompt for a button to be pressed on the printer control panel, or an 8-digit PIN must be entered on the mobile device.

  • Advanced: Some printer models offer advanced settings to require users to enter a security code. Other advanced options include the ability to not broadcast or show the Wi-Fi Direct Name on reports.

About the printer Wi-Fi Direct name

In printer lists shown on the mobile device or computer, printers with a Wi-Fi Direct connection include "DIRECT" in the printer name by default.

In environments where more than one printer of the same model is installed, it might be helpful to assign a unique Wi-Fi Direct name for each printer to make it easier to identify the printers when using Wi-Fi Direct printing.

Obtain the printer's IP address

To access the Embedded Web Server (EWS), you must have the printer's IP address. Locate the IP address on the printer control panel using the following steps.

Example IP address: 192.168.0.1
