Driver and software types

Some printers have multiple driver options for use depending on the environment, printer connection type, and availability.

  • Full solution – The Full solution is custom drivers and/or software created for select printers. "HP Full feature driver" or "HP Full software and drivers" offer a complete solution, including full printer software functionality and the most advanced features available for the printer, and does not require additional HP software.

Recommended where available, the Full solution is either included on the HP Windows 8/8.1 CD/DVD that came with a new printer or is available for download from www.hp.com/go/support. Can be installed via USB or network.

  • Basic PCL6 driver – PCL6 drivers use the printer's resources (internal processor and memory) to process print commands. It is a custom driver created for select printers that support PCL 6. Should not be confused with the UPD PCL 6.

This download, available only from www.hp.com/go/support, can be used to provide basic print or print/scan software features. Enables more advanced software functionality than the drivers included InOS or Windows Update. Can be installed via USB or network.

  • Basic Host-based – Host-based drivers use the computer's (host's) resources to process print commands when the computer is connected to the printer via USB cable. It is a custom driver created for host-based printers to provide basic print or print/scan software features.

Enables more advanced software functionality than the drivers included InOS or Windows Update. Similar to the Basic PCL6 driver, this driver is available only from www.hp.com/go/support. Also known as a Plug and Play driver because it can be installed via USB only.

  • Plug and Play driver or package – Host-based driver that can be installed via USB only. Similar to the Basic Host-based option, this driver is available only from www.hp.com/go/support.

  • Universal Print Driver (UPD) – HP Universal driver download for use by customers that require print-only software features or for use by system administrators that want to use the file for distribution.

Includes PCL 6 and PostScript versions (UPD PCL 5 is supported in Windows 8/8.1 using the UPD PCL 5 version 5.7 and later; PCL5 version 5.6 and earlier are NOT supported in Windows 8/8.1). Not recommended for All-in-One printers.

Often used in a business environment by administrators or IT staff when printing via a managed print server to multiple printer models in a static or mobile print environment. Can be installed via USB or network, but is typically installed via network.

    NOTE:

The HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 is recommended for most printing needs. It is used for general office applications such as word processing or spreadsheet applications, etc.

The printer must have PostScript (PS) printing capability to use the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PostScript. Use the PostScript version for the following:

    • When using a PostScript printer

    • When printing from Adobe or other highly graphic intensive applications

    • When printing documents containing a significant number of graphics or macros

    • When printing in a mixed environment, for example, printing from both Windows and Macintosh applications

  • Windows Update – Basic, driver included in Windows Update for the Windows 8/8.1 operating system (OS). For most printers, this driver provides print-only functionality (no scan features). Select printers will also have basic WIA support.

Use Devices and Printers to run Windows Update and obtain the latest drivers and updates. Best used when no other solution is available to provide limited print-only software features.

  • In-Operating System (InOS) – Basic, print-only (no scan) driver included in the Windows 8/8.1 operating system (OS) to provide limited print software features. Some of the advanced features may not be available. For some printers, these are the only driver options available. Best used when unable to connect to the internet or when no other solution is available. In the case of All-in-One printers, this is considered a better choice than UPD.

  • Point and print driver bundle – Typically used by administrators or IT staff to allow for Point and Print interaction among different operating systems. Can be used to install a shared driver on a network print server and then to point to the print server share from a network client.

    NOTE:

This option is available to Enterprise customers but is not listed in this document. For more information about Point and Print driver bundles, go to www.hp.com/go/upd.

Information

*

Use the driver included in the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 operating system (In OS). This is the only driver option for Windows RT (ARM processor) tablets.

For instructions, go to HP LaserJet - Install the driver for an HP printer on a network in Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1.

1

The InOS driver is included in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and automatically installs for printers that are on a non-domain network with 30 devices or less.

To manually install this option, use the Add Printer wizard. For instructions, go to HP LaserJet - Install the driver for an HP printer on a network in Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1.

2

Windows Update automatically installs the driver when the computer has an internet connection. If the company restricts access to the internet or Windows Update, contact the system administrator.

3

Universal Print Driver (UPD) provides print-only (no scan or fax) support. UPD includes an installer that enables either a traditional or dynamic mode install.

4

Full feature drivers or Full solutions are larger file downloads. When using a dial-up connection, consider downloading the Basic, PLC6, Host-based, or Plug and Play option, if available.

To check, click the link in the Recommended solution column for the printer.

5

This printer must first install the .msi file from www.hp.com/support, HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 / Server 2012, in order to successfully install using a USB connection.

For InOS drivers, run Windows Update to obtain and automatically install the .msi file and the latest driver.

6

This printer is fully supported using the recommended solution which provides print and scan software.

7

UPD version 5.5 and earlier is not supported in Windows 8.

UPD version 5.6, released December 2012, is supported and includes UPD PCL 6 and UPD PostScript.

UPD PCL 5 is supported in Windows 8 using the UPD PCL 5 version 5.7 and later; PCL5 version 5.6 and earlier are NOT supported in Windows 8.

8

To install this printer via a network connection, use Devices and Printers (Add Printer Wizard).

For instructions, go to HP LaserJet - Install HP print software on a network in Windows.

9

To install the driver, connect the printer to the computer using a supported connection type. Some printers do not support network or wireless installs. For these printers, use a USB connection.

Some tablets do not support USB installs. For these printers, use a wireless connection. Select printers have wireless accessories which will enable a wireless install.

10

To scan, connect the printer to the computer using a supported connection type. Some printers do not support wireless scanning or scanning over a network. For these printers, use a USB connection.

Some tablets do not support USB scanning. For these printers, use a wireless connection. Select printers might have wireless accessories which will enable wireless scanning.

11

Fax capability is available for select printers only. Use the HP PC Send Fax Driver, or the HP LaserJet MFP Wizard Console, where available.

12

Internet connection required. If internet access is not available, use the InOS driver.

For instructions on how to manually install the drivers and software, go to HP LaserJet - Install the driver for an HP printer on a network in Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1.

13

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to enable and configure scan features.

14

There is no USB support for ARM processor tablets for this printer. Use a wireless network to install the InOS driver included in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

15

First, download the .msi installer HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 from www.hp.com, load the HP PCL6 driver into the driver store, and then connect the USB cable.

16

For a network installation, use the TCP/IP option.

17

The Basic driver is a PCL 6 Print driver or PCL 6 Print and Scan driver. In some cases, this does not include an installer (driver only).

If after you download and double-click the file an installer does not automatically launch, install the print driver using the Add Printer Wizard.

18

Parallel and Serial ports are not supported in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. A USB converter or optional network accessory is needed to print/install drivers.

19

When printing from Internet Explorer in Windows 8/8.1, only 1 page per sheet might be printed using the Tiled Modern UI Desktop.

To print more than one page per sheet from Internet Explorer, use the classic or traditional Windows desktop mode, OR change the default print settings in the Tiled Modern UI Desktop.

In the Control Panel under Hardware and Sound, select View devices and printers. Right-click the printer, select Printing preferences, and then under Pages per sheet, select the desired number of pages per sheet.

20

The Color LaserJet 5 and 5M only have a Postscript driver available. The Color LaserJet 5M uses the PostScript (PS) language for printing and has a PS language module installed. The Color LaserJet 5 did not have the PS language module installed but did have an optional module available.

The Postscript driver will not work with the Color LaserJet 5 unless it has the optional PS language module installed.

For color printing on a Color LaserJet 5, consider searching the Web for a PostScript module for this printer, and then obtain the driver from Windows Update.

21

The InOS driver is the only HP driver available for this printer in Windows 8.1.

22

Earlier operating systems like Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 DO support printing over a USB connection. However, the USB connection for this printer in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.0 is NOT supported.

To print in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.0, use a network connection with the either the HP UPD PCL 6, UPD PS, or the HP drivers included in Windows Update or the Microsoft operating system (InOS).
