Learn how to change the default-set factory PIN or administrator password for the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
Some printer settings in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) are password protected and will require the factory-set default PIN. Typically, this PIN is set as the administrator (or admin) password for the EWS. To assign a new admin password, use the instructions in this document.
Applicable printers
This document applies to the following HP LaserJet Pro printers:

Requirements before you begin
Make sure to obtain the factory-set default PIN. The factory-set default PIN is located on a label inside the cartridge access door on the front of the printer.
The factory-set default PIN can be updated during initial printer set up on HP LaserJet Pro 4001-4004 and HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101-4104 Standard printer model series manufactured since January 2023. For these printer models, ensure to obtain the updated 8-digit Admin PIN.
LOCATION OF FACTORY-SET DEFAULT PIN
Step one: Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) from a web browser
Follow these steps to obtain the printer's IP address, and then use it to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) from a web browser.
Your printer must be connected to an IP-based network before you can access the EWS.

Obtain the IP address or the host name of the printer.

On the printer control panel, press the OK button to display the Home screen.

Use the arrow buttons to navigate to the following menus, and then press the OK button after selecting the menu:

Setup

Network Setup
-
General Settings
-

On the General Settings menu, select Show the IP Address, and then select Yes to view the printer's IP address or host name.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon
, or the Ethernet icon
to view the printer's IP address or host name.

Open the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS).

On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displays on the printer control panel.

Press Enter on the computer keyboard.
NOTE:If the browser displays a message indicating that accessing the website might not be safe, select the option to continue to the website. Accessing the website will not harm the computer.
The EWS opens.

Step two: Assign a new administrator password
Follow these steps to change the password set for the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

On the EWS Home page, click the Settings tab.

In the left navigation pane, click Security, and then select the Password Settings option.

On the Log In with PIN screen, enter the factory-set default PIN, and then click Submit.
If you signed in the EWS with a PIN, the Log In with PIN screen will not display.

Enter a new password in the Password field.
IMPORTANT:The default number of characters required in the password is "8" and must not exceed "16" characters.
The new password must contain three of the following characteristics:

Uppercase letters
-
Lowercase letters
-
Numbers
-
Special characters
NOTE:If the password requirements are not met, an error message will display on the page.

Enter the new password again in the Confirm Password field.
IMPORTANT:Make sure to note the new admin password set for the EWS. If this password is lost or forgotten, you will have to perform a factory reset procedure.
After a printer reset, HP+ printer models must be connected to HP Cloud services again.

Click Apply to save the new password setting.
After configuring a new password, use the new password to access the EWS printer settings.
To check if the password is changed, print the Printer Status Report from the Reports menu. In the Connectivity Settings section, check if the Printer PIN is Custom user password set.
