HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101, HP LaserJet Pro 3001-3008, 4001-4004, MFP 3101-3108, 4101-4104 series - An "Invalid Pairing Code" or "Expired Pairing Code" message displays during printer setup

During the printer setup process, if an "Invalid Pairing Code" or "Expired Pairing Code" message displays in the HP Smart Setup web portal, use the instructions in this document to resolve the issue.

Introduction

As part of the printer setup process, HP LaserJet Pro 3000 and 4000 series printers can be connected to the HP Cloud. Connecting to the HP Cloud will give you access to cloud-based features and services, and additional printing solutions. To connect to the HP Cloud, a pairing code is required.

After network setup is complete, the printer will retrieve a Pairing Code from HP Cloud services that can be used for two (2) hours.

  • On multifunction printers (MFPs), the Pairing Code will display on the printer control panel and will automatically refresh after two hours.

  • On single-function printers (SFPs), the Pairing Code must be printed from the HP Easy Start software. If the code is not used to complete the printer activation within two hours, you will have to print a new code using the HP Easy Start software.

The information in this document applies to the following HP LaserJet Pro printer series:

  • HP LaserJet Pro 3001-3008dne/dwe HP+ Printer series

  • HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101-3108fdn/fdw Printer series

  • HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101-3108fdne/fdwe HP+ Printer series

  • HP LaserJet Pro 4001-4004n/dn/dw Printer series

  • HP LaserJet Pro 4001-4004ne/dne/dwe HP+ Printer series

  • HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101-4104dw/fdn/fdw Printer series

  • HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101-4104dwe/fdne/fdwe HP+ Printer series

Solution

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue when an "Invalid Pairing Code" or "Expired Pairing Code" message displays on the HP Smart Setup web portal during printer setup.

  1. When prompted for the Pairing Code in the HP Smart Setup web portal, confirm that you are entering the Pairing Code correctly.

Double-check that you did not make a typographical error with your entry.

  2. Make sure that you are entering the correct Pairing Code.

If more than two hours have passed since you originally retrieved the Pairing Code from the printer, then that code has expired and a new code has been automatically generated.

To obtain the new Pairing Code, check the printer control panel, or return to the HP Easy Start software.

    NOTE:

In the unlikely case that the printer did not automatically generate a new Pairing Code, you can force the printer to generate a new code by turning the printer off and then back on. Once the printer has been power-cycled, a new Pairing Code will display on the control panel or in the HP Easy Start software.
